What sets Oregon apart
OBH heritage and elk culture. Oregon Bow Hunters was founded in 1948, making it one of the older continuous state archery organizations in the country, and it runs a tightly choreographed three-tournament year (Indoor late winter, Outdoor in June, 3D in July) plus an annual bow hunters convention. The State Outdoor follows NFAA National Field format exactly, which makes it an effective tune-up for archers headed to NFAA Nationals. The other defining trait is bowhunting depth. Oregon has some of the most coveted big-game bowhunting in the Northwest, with elk archery seasons that shape the entire late-summer pro shop calendar. Oregon sits in the NFAA Northwest Section.
When archers shoot here
Indoor runs roughly November through March, with OBH State Indoor as the marquee winter event in late February or early March. Outdoor opens in April in the Willamette Valley and May in higher elevations, running through October. OBH State Outdoor lands in June, State 3D in July. Bowhunters shift to broadhead sight-in mode in August and September ahead of the elk archery opener.
Governing body and community
Oregon Bow Hunters (OBH), founded 1948, is the NFAA state-affiliated body, running three annual state tournaments (Indoor, Outdoor, 3D) and the annual bow hunters convention. USA Archery activity in Oregon runs through clubs and JOAD programs. Oregon sits in the NFAA Northwest Section.
Disciplines you'll find
Oregon shoots all of it. Field has a strong following through OBH, with the State Outdoor following NFAA National Field format. 3D is huge, anchored by the OBH State 3D in July. Compound target dominates indoor leagues. Olympic recurve has a base in Portland and Eugene, anchored by JOAD programs. Bowhunting is the defining discipline, especially for elk and blacktail.
Getting started as a beginner
The cleanest way in is an intro lesson at a local club or commercial range. Most OBH affiliated clubs run beginner programs in 4 to 8 week blocks with equipment included, usually $80 to $250 for the full series. Commercial ranges in Portland and Eugene offer drop-in lessons in the $50 to $90 range. Look for a USA Archery Level 2 or NFAA-affiliated instructor. Don't buy gear in your first month. Rent, decide between recurve, compound, or traditional, then commit. A first proper setup runs $400 to $1,500 depending on discipline.
Tournaments and events to watch for
OBH State Indoor (late February or early March), State Outdoor (June, NFAA National Field format), and State 3D (July, two-day 40-target unmarked format) are the anchors. NFAA Northwest Section events route through Oregon regularly. USA Archery state target championships run through the year. Add club-hosted 3D shoots most weekends from April through October. Check the events page for what's coming up in your region.
Where to buy gear
Oregon has a deep pro shop network, especially focused on elk and blacktail bowhunting setups. Portland, Eugene, Salem, Bend, and Medford all have dedicated archery shops with full tuning benches. Cascade, Coast Range, and Eastern Oregon pro shops tend to know elk and blacktail setups cold and stock heavier draw weights. If you're new, walk in. Don't buy your first bow online. A good shop fitting saves you the cost of replacing a too-heavy bow six months later.
